What do you think about the crisis in Pakistan? Someone asked. I was dumb and surprised at myself. I read newspaper daily, I am educated (highly educated would be more correct) but I didn’t know what to say! A few minutes pause and then a strange thought aroused in my mind: why the hell do I need to think about everything in this world? Intellectualism is a burden sometimes necessary, but most of the time self-imposed. Now you all, Please don’t react instantly, think over it while you scan this blog. People are judgmental! Why? No one can tell. What I think is that it is our self-imposed intellectualism that makes us judgmental. We think we know it all! We know better what other person should wear, how he/she should behave, how budget should be planned, how PM should intervene. We can think and decide better than the person in question. We are qualified, educated, decent, and religious and because of these attributes we must have a say in every damn issue on this earth. We all are experts: at other person’s affairs. From rickshawallah to bus conductor everyone is an expert at external affairs. The point is why should I speak? Who cares for my views? Mr. Musharraf didn’t consult me before imposing emergency; Dr. Manmohan Singh already has so many intelligent advisors. Democracy or no democracy that’s none of my business. What I have to do with my neighbor’s daughter’s boyfriends and my colleague’s affairs! It appears to me that we are carrying an unnecessary burden. With whatever little bit of knowledge we have, we interfere in other person’s affairs or give advice to Mr. Bush and Manmohan Singh. Giving advice is our hobby. Most of the time people are giving advice, without being asked. Strange! Isn’t it. Surprisingly, we all hate the reversal of roles i.e we genuinely dislike the individual who advises us!If one is not going by the rules of society, one is judged bad, if son is not following family business he is termed worthless, if girl is not accepting mom’s philosophy she is indecent. What is difficult to accept is that every human being has right to decide his/her lifestyle, we are not authorized to decide wrong or right for the next person. Self proclaimed intellectuals feel they are not getting enough respect and attention, when they are neglected. Our adamant intellect prevents us from accepting that different opinions do exist and they might be of considerable value. We must know each and everything, as we all believe in power of information. When everyone is so well informed, intellect is a burden, to know more than the other, to prove ourselves more intelligent than others. To discuss every sense and nonsense thing gives us a feeling of pride. In this whole process we have lost the power of analysis. The irony is we know so much and understand so little! It this what intellect means? Why can’t we be less intelligent and interfering so that others and we can live with peace?
